Giant Baby Shocks China

The WSJ’s excellent China Real Time Report has posted this remarkable video of a 15.5lb baby born last Saturday in Xinxiang City, Henan province. Named Chun Chun, or “Spring,” he arrived twice as heavy as the average newborn.

Readers may remember a headline-making 19.2lb baby born last May in Indonesia and other record-breaking newborns. While these babies seem to be noteworthy exceptions rather than a larger (pun intended) trend, gestational diabetes and a dangerous condition called gigantism can also affect birth weight.

Add the word macrosomia to your vocabulary, a word describing abnormally large newborns. Hopefully the auspiciousness of being born in the year of the dragon will bring him luck proportional to his size.

I think the video is heartwarming – the mother looks completely wiped out (with good reason), while the father is glowing with pride. Let’s all just be thankful it wasn’t us who went through that delivery!
