Hot Link: China No. 90 on Akamai’s Global Internet Speed Ranking List
M.I.C. Gadget brings us this report detailing the latest Akamai (a global CDM provider) list on global internet speeds:
The largest CDN service provider Akamai has released its latest “State of the Internet” report for the third quarter of 2011. The data shows the global average Internet speed has increased 39 percent, with an average connection speed up to 2.7Mbps. Among the 100 fastest cities worldwide, cities in Asia continue to dominate the list. South Korea become top No.1 again with the fastest Internet connections of 46.8 Mbps. Hong Kong ranked No.2 spot, while China ranked only 90 …
According to the report, the average connection speed of South Korea increase 18 percent, up to 16.7Mbps. Hong Kong also had an average connection speed of 10.5 Mbps. China’s average connection speed was merely at 1.4Mbps, which is below the worldwide average of 2.7Mbps.

South Korea comes out tops with a white-hot average of 2,202 kbps and Congo is at the bottom at a mere 13 kbps.
China’s average download speed is only 245 kbps, ranking it 82nd worldwide.
I’m guessing there’s substantial variation across China, far more than other countries. Would be interesting to see an international city comparison – NY, Helsinki, Buenos Aires, London, Beijing.
