My girlfriend had bought some beers for me on her way back from work and when I got home she had put them in the freezer to ensure they were cool. It’s that kind of thoughtfulness that true romance is based on.
Most romantic surpise I ever received was in Beijing: It was late at night after one of the recent heavy snowfalls. My husband and I had gone to dinner. He was wearing a nice jacket and shirt and I was wearing a white dress. As we walked back into our hutong apartment complex, my husband surpised me by putting up three dozen Chinese red lanterns in our private small courtyard. It looked so beautiful against the black sky and stars and freshly fallen and falling snow. He then asked me if I wanted to join him in walking through the courtyard. He took my hand kissed it and led me inside. We began to throw snowballs at each other within the red lit square and then he grabbed me close and hugged me so tight! Then after a pause he stepped back and said “May I have this dance?” He then began to dance our wedding waltz and we twirled around the courtyard singing the song we danced to. It ended in the center of the lamps and he dipped me and kissed me softly and passionately. That is my most romantic surprise . Just dancing amongst the glow of the red lanterns all alone simply lost in our love and devotion and magic. Only in China could we recapture a dance so special to us
I did this for my wife! We went to the Great Wall this October during the holiday. When we had climbed the Great Wall at Mutiyanu, we sat at the top of the cliff watching the sunset. Then, as it got cold we rushed back to the car to head to a restaurant in Beijing, a sushi bar. After our meal, I told my wife to close her eyes for 10 seconds. I disappeared, and she opened her eyes to see only a bottle of wine saying ‘drink me twice and go to the tobagan ride. At the ride (slide down the wall), my wife got an envelope from the slide personnel to which said slide down and then go to the car’. So my wife goes down and to the car and BAM there I was leaning against the car with a dozen roses around me waiting for her!
I told one of my guy friends that I was interested in how my sister had met her Australian husband while touring Europe. I casually mentioned how her now husband had moved from Sydney, Australia to one of the remote, depressing towns in California just to be with her- and that’s how crazy love can be. A couple of months later, I get an email from my guy friend that he was planning on moving to Beijing after saving all his money to travel the world to live and teach here. It didn’t pan out at the time, but a year later, he’s now living in Beijing…and we’ll see what happens. The most wonderful, pleasant surprises really do come when it’s least expected, and even if the traditional happy ending does not happen, it’s nice to find a good friend was truly listening. Sometimes, that’s all a girl could ask for and wat
For Valentine’s Day two years ago, I got my now wife’s name tattooed on my hip bone. On V Day I took her to a hotel overlooking the Glen beach in Adelaide, Australia and put rose petals on the bed. After bathing her in the bathtub I had her towel off and surprised her by standing on the bed with the petals all around and holding note cards which talked about how special she was to me. I showed them to her as she read them out loud. I then gave her a heart shape necklace, showed her the tattoo and made her a shrimp salad with champagne.
We spent 3 weeks hiking near the Golden Triangle in Northern Thailand. We hiked for miles every day, waded through rivers or crossed on the tiniest of bridges. It was worth it for the amazing sights we saw. There was little to eat but rice and vegetables, nothing to drink but purified water. Towards the end I was bitten to shreds and caught food poisoning.
When we finally got back to a small village I collapsed on the riverbank in a mess. My girlfriend disappeared for a couple of minutes and returned with an classically shaped glass bottle of Coke, so cold that condensation was forming on the side, and a chocolate Cornetto. It was the most perfect moment.
I told my wife we had to pick up a friend at the airport. I had secretly won a stay at the Hilton Airport Deluxe Suite from agendabeijing. The look on her face when we walked into the room and I told her we would be staying the night was priceless. We had never done anything so luxurious together.
Ok so it didn’t happen, but why not? She deserves it, having to put up with a guy like me all the time.
My wife saying “yes”……
Wow! Your stories gave me goosebumps! I had no idea Beijing was such a romantic city! Our team has been going back and forth over this one – you are all amazing, and our team has been torn between Matt C and Francis. We eventually had to leave it up to a coin flip! Best two our of three, and Matt C won! Francis, not to worry! I’ve pulled something out of my private goody stash (yes, all editors have them!) as well! Await my email!
In case you were wondering, the private stash includes some gift certificates for dining at the Hilton Wangfujing, one of my very favorite places!
Thanks Jennifer! Whatever prize is good
Um, my yahoo account though is downfor some reason, so can you e-mail me at teamal.kyiv@gmail.com
Did you hear from us yet, Francis? If not, check in the front of the magazine and give us a call! You’ll want to talk to Cao Yue.
